Occasionally, I get reports that various restaurants are serving ramps dishes
while they are in season. If you hear of any, please let me know. Once again,
please call ahead to make sure they are serving ramps on the day you plan to go.Restaurants everywhere are putting ramps on the menu! Uniquely West Virginia Wine and Food Festival, Berkeley Springs, WV April 24. 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Ramps and mushrooms dominate the food section of the festival, and both can be foraged in the West Virginia woods. Lot 12 Public House is at the festival with ramp soup, ramp corn muffins, fried morel sandwiches, fresh morels and ramps packaged individually. The noted restaurant of Chef Damien Heath, the only West Virginian on the James Beard best chef regional finalist list, will also be serving specials with local morels and ramps all weekend. The Country Inn is having a “Ramp Feast” all weekend with ramps at tapas, ramps in the West Virginia Room and ramps for breakfast. Uniquely West Virginia is produced by Travel Berkeley Springs, with support from the Division of Culture and History Fairs and Festivals. Ramp Festival Dinner Train, Elkins, WV April 24. Four hour round-trip to Tygart Junction features a Ramp-themed 4 course gourmet meal and entertainment. $70 per person. Departs Elkins depot at 5:00 p.m. Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. Executive Chef Dale Hawkins celebrates the Ramp – a member of the onion family that tastes like a mix between onion and garlic – through a variety of innovative dishes in his New Appalachian culinary style. For info, call 304-269-7400. Beechwood Inn in Clayton GA will be serving ramps on their menu in 2010. Call (706) 782-5485 for the dates. The Beechwood Inn will also be the site of the Wild Foods Foraging Hike and Dinner again this year. The dates are June 18 - 20 and September 10 - 12. Rella's Roadside Cafe, 3956 Hacker Valley Road, Hacker Valley, WV, (304) 493-6658. Noon to 6 pm. Dinner is always the first Saturday in April and the Saturday before Deer Season starts. The 2010 dates are April 3 and November 20. No reservations will be taken at all. The menu includes ramps, bacon, fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, white beans, cornbread or a roll, pickled eggs and pickled beets. Beverages served are coffee, tea, lemonade or sassafras tea. The dinner also includes a piece of homemade pie. Take out is available. Poppy's Italian Grill (Formerly Dave's Restaurant), 1633 Buckhannon Pike, Nutter Fort, WV had a ramp dinner in 2008. (304) 622-6863. Recently (March 2009) a sign for "ramp pizza" was spotted at Fox's Pizza Den, 101 N. Washington Ave. in Elkins, WV. (304) 637-8200 Also in Elkins (April 2008), a sign was spotted that says Ramp burgers delivered in Elkins, number to call for more info. 630-1121. C & S Restaurant, 46 Oakford Ave. in Richwood, WV is supposed to serve ramps in many of their dishes. They serve them cooked in bacon grease, in omelets, as a topping on hamburgers and in salads. The Lodge at Kelly Mountain, Kelly Mountain Rd (33 E) Elkins, WV was featured in the King of Stink documentary. The segment was filmed the same weekend as the Ramp Cook-off and Festival in Elkins. So I assume they still have a ramp menu at that time of year. By the way, if you dine there you will enjoy one of the finest views in West Virginia. (304)-635-0300. If you go to Houson TX, Mark’s American Cuisine has featured ramps on their menu in the past. Jim & Jennie's Campground in Crossnore, NC has had a ramp dinner around the end of May in the past. Call (828) 733-2807 or (828)733-0682 for details. The Westline Inn in Westline PA will be having a ramp dinner on April 25, 2010. Without a doubt this is our biggest yearly event and it gets bigger every year. You'll want to come early for this very popular festival, or you may find yourself walking a ways because all the parking spaces in town will be filled. We have a band and a leek buffet (where almost all the dishes have leeks in them). You can enter our "Leek Dip Contest" for prizes and bragging rights. Your breath will end up smelling like your dog's, so if your date eats leeks, you better eat some too. Come early! I found an article in the Chicago Sun-Times that list some Chicago restaurants that are serving ramps. I've been trying to find out the names of some big city restaurants that have served ramps in season in the past. Here's what I've found in New York City so far. If you go, be sure to get the phone number from their website and find out when they will have ramps on the menu.
